Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata

Highlight of the Day: Cock of the Rock and the descent into the cloud forest

The journey begins early in Cusco. We travel through the inter-Andean valleys and local communities before reaching Ninamarca, where we stop to see the pre-Inca tombs known as chullpas.

We then continue to Paucartambo, a traditional town known for its colonial character and local culture. From here, the road climbs toward the higher parts of the route before beginning the descent into the cloud forest.

As the altitude decreases, the vegetation changes. Orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and other plants become more common. We stop at a Cock of the Rock viewing area, where there may be an opportunity to see these distinctive birds before continuing toward Pilcopata.

The route offers a clear change in scenery, from the high Andes to the greener and warmer cloud forest as you approach the rainforest.

The afternoon and evening give you a first chance to experience the rainforest on foot, when the forest begins to change as daylight fades.

After the clay lick visit, we continue exploring the rainforest. The area is home to many bird and monkey species, and your guide will help you look for wildlife along the trails.

After lunch, we visit Machuwasi Lake and explore the area by balsa raft. The quiet water and surrounding vegetation provide a good setting for looking for birds, caimans, capybaras, and other wildlife.

Spending more time in this area allows you to explore both the forest trails and the quieter surroundings of the lake during the same day.

Day 4: Amazon Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco

From Atalaya, our vehicle takes us back toward Cusco. As we pass through the cloud forest, there may be opportunities to stop briefly for bird observation when conditions allow.

We continue through the Andes and expect to arrive in Cusco at approximately 5:00 p.m. Drop-off is provided at your hotel.

The return journey gives you a final look at the changing landscapes before leaving the rainforest and arriving back in the Andes.
